Transavia Cancellation Policy — Can You Claim Refund or Compensation?

If Transavia cancels your flight, you are owed a full refund of the unused ticket or an alternative flight to your destination. If the cancellation came less than 14 days before departure, you can also claim €250 to €600 in cash compensation on top. Those are two separate entitlements, and you do not have to choose between them.

That distinction is the whole point of the transavia cancellation policy. When the airline pulls the flight, EU law decides what you get. When you decide not to travel, the fare conditions on your booking decide, and those are far less generous.

Key Takeaways

• An airline-initiated cancellation always gives you a choice between a full refund and rebooking onto another flight to your destination.
• Notice of less than 14 days adds cash compensation of €250 to €600 on top of that refund or rebooking.
• Under the transavia cancellation policy, passenger-initiated cancellations are refundable only on flexible fare types.
• A significant schedule change is treated like a cancellation, so free rerouting or a refund applies.

What the Transavia Cancellation Policy Actually Covers

Transavia is a low-cost carrier, and low-cost pricing is built on restrictive tickets. The cheapest fares are sold on the understanding that you are locking in your seat and giving up the right to change your mind. That is the commercial half of the transavia cancellation policy, and it lives in your booking confirmation, not in any regulation.

The statutory half is different. Because Transavia operates flights departing from EU airports and is an EU carrier, EC 261/2004 applies to your booking. Under that regulation the airline owes you specific things the moment it cancels, regardless of what you paid or which fare bucket you sat in.

Passenger-Initiated vs Airline-Initiated Cancellations

Here is the honest version of the transavia cancellation policy, because a lot of guides blur this.

If you cancel, you are asking for a refund the airline never promised you. On a basic fare you will usually get back only the unused taxes and government charges, and even that depends on the conditions you accepted at checkout. Flexible fare types, sold at a premium, are the ones that allow a genuine refund or a low-cost change. Check the fare rules in your confirmation email before you assume anything.

If Transavia cancels, the position flips completely. You are entitled to:

• A full refund of the ticket within seven days, or
• Re-routing to your final destination at the earliest opportunity, or
• Re-routing at a later date that suits you, subject to seat availability

You pick. The airline does not get to hand you a voucher and call the matter closed, and accepting a voucher can weaken your position later.

Right to care sits alongside all of this. Once your waiting time passes two hours on short flights, three hours on medium ones and four hours on long-haul, the airline must provide meals, refreshments and communication. If the replacement flight leaves the next day, that includes hotel accommodation and transfers.

Transavia Flight Cancellation Compensation: Amounts and Deadlines

Cash compensation is the part of the transavia cancellation policy most passengers miss. It is separate from the refund, and it depends on two things: how much notice you were given and how far you were flying.

The 14-day rule is the gate. Cancellation notified 14 days or more before departure means no cash compensation, full stop. Less than 14 days, and transavia flight cancellation compensation becomes payable unless the airline can prove an extraordinary circumstance.

The bands are set by distance:

• €250 for flights of 1,500 km or less
• €400 for intra-EU flights over 1,500 km, and all other flights between 1,500 and 3,500 km
• €600 for flights over 3,500 km

Most of the Transavia network sits in the first two bands, so €250 or €400 is the realistic figure for a typical route out of Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Eindhoven or Paris.

One reduction to know about. If the airline re-routes you and you arrive within a defined window of your original arrival time, it can cut the compensation by 50%. That is a legitimate reduction under the regulation, not an airline invention, but it only applies when the re-routing genuinely limited your delay. If you landed hours late anyway, the full amount stands. The same arithmetic applies to flight cancelled compensation claims against any EU carrier, not just this one.

When Transavia Does Not Have to Pay

Nothing in the transavia cancellation policy overrides one exception: extraordinary circumstances. That defence is real, but narrower than airlines like to suggest. Genuine cases include severe weather, air traffic control strikes, security incidents and political instability. What does not qualify: technical faults discovered during routine maintenance, crew rostering failures, or the knock-on effect of the airline's own earlier delays.

The burden of proof sits with the airline. You do not have to disprove its excuse. It has to evidence the cause and show it took all reasonable measures to avoid the cancellation. A one-line email saying "operational reasons" is not evidence.

Strikes are the grey area. Third-party strikes, such as airport ground handlers or ATC, generally count as extraordinary. Strikes by the airline's own staff usually do not, because internal industrial relations are considered part of running an airline.

How the Transavia Cancellation Policy Handles Schedule Changes and Denied Boarding

A significant schedule change is not legally a cancellation, but it is treated much the same way in practice. If Transavia moves your departure by several hours or reroutes you through a different airport, you can refuse the new itinerary and take a refund or a rebooking instead. Silence counts as acceptance, so respond in writing.

Overbooking is a separate scenario with its own rules. If you hold a confirmed booking and are turned away at the gate despite arriving on time, you are looking at denied boarding compensation rather than a cancellation claim, and the payment bands are the same €250 to €600.

Evidence to Keep Before You Claim

Any claim under the transavia cancellation policy stands on paperwork. Gather this while it is still easy to find:

• Your booking reference and original itinerary
• The cancellation email or SMS, with its timestamp, which proves how much notice you had
• Boarding passes for any replacement flight
• Receipts for meals, hotels and transport you paid for yourself
• Any written reason the airline gave for the cancellation

The timestamp matters more than anything else on that list. It is what establishes whether you fell inside or outside the 14-day window, and airlines have been known to backdate their account of when notice went out.

Claiming Yourself or Using a Company

You can absolutely claim direct under the transavia cancellation policy, and it costs nothing to try. Send a written claim citing EC 261/2004, your flight number, the date and the compensation band you are claiming. Plenty of straightforward transavia compensation claims are settled this way.

Where it gets harder is the second round. If the airline rejects you on extraordinary circumstances, you need to know whether the excuse holds up, and that means understanding weather records, ATC logs and how the courts have ruled on similar facts. That is the point where a flight delay compensation company earns its keep, working on a no win, no fee basis so a rejection costs you nothing.

For route-specific detail and the current claim form, our transavia compensation page covers what applies to each part of the network. Either way, do not let the airline's first no be the end of it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I cancel my Transavia flight and get a refund?

Only if you bought a flexible fare type, or if the airline cancels the flight itself. On standard low-cost tickets a passenger-initiated cancellation usually recovers just the unused taxes and government charges. Check the fare conditions in your booking confirmation before cancelling, because the difference between fare types under the transavia cancellation policy is significant.

How much compensation does Transavia pay for cancelled flights?

Between €250 and €400 for most short and medium-haul routes, rising to €600 on flights over 3,500 km. The amount depends on distance, not ticket price. Transavia flight cancellation compensation only becomes payable when notice was given less than 14 days before departure and no extraordinary circumstance applies.

What happens if Transavia changes my flight time?

If the change is significant, you can decline it and take either a free rebooking or a full refund. Minor adjustments of a few minutes do not qualify. Respond in writing as soon as the notification arrives, because failing to object is usually read as acceptance of the new schedule.
